“The Fear”
(May 29, 1964)
Hazel Court joins up with TV Baddie Peter Mark Richman (Dynasty) who has an unusually positive part as Trooper Robert Franklin. Court plays a nervous neurotic New York socialite with a not too convincing American accent. Richman gives her a few smart comments to prove he ain’t the country yokel she takes him for and they soon make up an unusual couple trying to fight the fear instilled in them when investigating mysterious lights in the night, giant footprints on the ground and huge fingerprints on a tossed about car. Are they the first victims of a, well, gigantic alien invasion? Don’t look at the photo if you still want to be surprised.
This episode is from Twilight Zone’s fifth and final season. In actual fact it is the penultimate episode overall and not one of the Zone’s best. As the title suggests, this is all about fear, though there isn’t anything really fearful about the initial premise. It’s a just about average production, but at least not as saccharine as the series’ last episode The Bewitchin’ Pool that was transmitted three weeks afterwards.
It is good to see a Hammer Glamour Girl involved in one of THE great classic fantasy series of all time, and as such reason enough to give it a shot. There are worse ways to spend half an hour of your time.
