Bryan Fraser had emailed me a query about Madeline Smith's contribution for In the Looking Glass that let to some discussion on the Hammer Film and Isle of the Dead discussion groups.
Apart from a misspelt reference in a Little Shoppe of Horrors article about Smith (it there appeared as Looking Trough the Looking Glass) I was previously not aware of this series. As of time of writing it has also not yet shown up on Madeline Smith’s IMDB filmography, so it’s a bit of mystery.
People who can recall it, seem to generally recall it with a lot of fondness, so I decided to summarise some of the various memories below. Beware: They are memories that go back the better part of three decades, but it’s the best we can go on at the moment. If someone has additional details or scans, please let me know. If someone even has a recording, for crying out loud don’t wait and touch base right away!!!!
In the Looking Glass was a series of 6 half hour shows that were shown on BBC2 between January 17 and February 21, 1978. According to one contributor of the Hammer Group “Maddy played a different character each week in a different story. It had some (at the time) typically dreadful chromakey effects and it was very experimental and off-beat”. Further memories include “Maddy on some giant chequered chessboard singing some little ditty! It was very surreal and the music was (electronically) good for it's time-very surreal”.
Wikipedia is referring to “an unforgettable episode centred around the players on a gigantic Monopoly board”. Some further memories can be found on the pages of the Mausoleum Club.
Needless, to say I am more than intrigued now and would do anything (well, in reason) to get a chance to watch that old series.
Click on the pictures below to see scans about the series taken from issues of the Radio Times. (Thanks Bryan!)
